A prophet delivers a bold warning against Jeroboam’s altar, then makes a fatal mistake of his own. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Kings 13.
A man of God from Judah comes to Bethel by the word of the Lord, crying out against the altar Jeroboam has built, prophesying that a future king named Josiah will one day burn the bones of these idolatrous priests upon it, giving a sign that the altar itself will split apart and its ashes pour out immediately. When Jeroboam, standing at the altar, stretches out his hand to have the prophet seized, his hand withers and dries up, and the altar splits apart exactly as foretold. Jeroboam pleads for healing, and the prophet prays for him, restoring his hand.
Jeroboam invites the man of God to refresh himself and receive a reward, but he refuses, explaining that God specifically commanded him not to eat bread, drink water, or return by the same way he came. As he departs by a different road, an old prophet living in Bethel hears of these events and pursues him, “deceiving,” “pathah” in Hebrew, him with a false claim that an angel had instructed him to bring the man of God back for a meal, though it was actually a lie.
Believing this false report, the man of God returns and eats with the old prophet, directly disobeying God’s original command. As he departs afterward, a lion meets him on the road and kills him, though remarkably, the lion does not devour the body or attack the donkey standing nearby, a clear, unmistakable sign of divine judgment. The old prophet, hearing of this, retrieves the body, mourns him, and buries him in his own grave, instructing his sons to bury him there too when he dies, since everything the man of God originally prophesied against Bethel’s altar will surely come to pass.
This unsettling account shows that even a clear calling and dramatic display of God’s power doesn’t exempt someone from the consequences of subsequent disobedience, especially disobedience that comes disguised as seemingly legitimate spiritual authority. Testing claimed guidance against what God has already clearly said remains essential, regardless of how convincing the source appears.
