1 KINGS 6 ‐ “Building the Temple”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “House” it comes from the Hebrew Word “bayith” which means “house, temple.”

After centuries of a portable tabernacle, Israel finally builds God a permanent house. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Kings 6.

In the fourth year of his reign, four hundred and eighty years after Israel left Egypt, Solomon begins building “the house,” “bayith” in Hebrew, of the Lord, with precise dimensions specified, sixty cubits long, twenty wide, and thirty high, along with a porch, windows, and chambers built around its sides. God speaks to Solomon during this construction, promising that if he walks in His statutes and keeps His commandments, He will perform the promise made to David, dwelling among the children of Israel and never forsaking His people.

The temple’s interior is lined entirely with cedar, carved with knops and open flowers, with no stone visible within, and the floor overlaid with fir. The oracle, the most holy place, is prepared to house the ark of the covenant, and two large cherubim of olive wood, overlaid with gold, are made with wings stretching from wall to wall, their wings touching each other in the middle of the room.

The entire interior of the temple, including its carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, is overlaid with pure gold, and Solomon overlays even the altar within the oracle with gold. The chapter closes noting that Solomon takes seven years to build this house, a monumental undertaking finally bringing to completion the very project David had longed to accomplish generations earlier.

God’s promise to Solomon during construction, that His presence depends on obedience rather than the temple’s physical grandeur alone, sets an important tone before the building is even finished. A magnificent structure alone was never going to guarantee God’s continued blessing. Genuine faithfulness would always matter more than impressive architecture.
