David, now old and unable to stay warm, is given a young woman named Abishag to care for him, though he does not know her intimately. Adonijah, David’s son next in line after the deaths of Amnon and Absalom, exalts himself, declaring “I will be king,” and gathers chariots, horsemen, and fifty men to run before him, securing support from Joab and Abiathar the priest, though Zadok, Benaiah, Nathan, and David’s mighty men remain loyal to David instead.
Adonijah holds a feast at Enrogel, inviting his brothers and Judah’s men but deliberately excluding Nathan, Benaiah, and Solomon. Nathan alerts Bathsheba to this danger, coaching her to remind David of his earlier promise that Solomon would reign after him. Bathsheba goes to David, and Nathan follows to confirm her report, and David, recalling his oath, immediately acts, instructing Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah to set Solomon on David’s own mule and anoint him king at Gihon.
They “anoint,” “mashach” in Hebrew, Solomon there, and the people rejoice with such loud celebration that the earth seems to shake, news that reaches Adonijah’s feast and causes his guests to scatter in fear. Adonijah, terrified, flees to the altar for sanctuary, and Solomon promises he will not be harmed if he shows himself worthy, sending him home in peace for now.
David’s decisive action, once reminded of his earlier promise, prevented what could have become a devastating succession crisis. This chapter shows how quickly ambition can move to seize power in a leadership vacuum, and how important it was that faithful advisors like Nathan and Bathsheba acted quickly to ensure God’s actual choice for the throne was honored.
