The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Trumpet” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shophar” which means “ram’s horn trumpet.”
David has barely recovered his throne when another rebellion breaks out almost immediately. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Samuel 20.
A troublemaker named Sheba blows a “trumpet,” “shophar” in Hebrew, and declares that Israel has no real portion in David, urging every man of Israel to abandon him and return to their tents, and much of Israel follows Sheba away from David, leaving only the men of Judah loyal to their king. David instructs Amasa, his newly appointed commander, to gather Judah’s forces within three days, but when Amasa delays beyond that time, David sends Abishai and Joab’s men instead to pursue Sheba before he can secure a fortified city.
Along the way, Joab encounters Amasa and, feigning a friendly greeting, treacherously stabs and kills him, much as he had done to Abner years earlier, then continues pursuing Sheba with the combined forces, leaving Amasa’s body in the road until someone moves it, since it was causing the passing soldiers to stop and stare.
Sheba takes refuge in the fortified city of Abelbethmaachah, and Joab besieges it, preparing to destroy the entire city to capture just one man. A wise woman from the city calls out to Joab, negotiating on the city’s behalf, and when Joab explains he only wants Sheba, the woman persuades the city’s inhabitants to throw Sheba’s head over the wall, ending the siege immediately without further bloodshed. Joab returns to Jerusalem, and the chapter closes with another summary of David’s officials, confirming stability has been restored to the kingdom once again.
The wise woman of Abel’s quick intervention, negotiating to save her entire city by sacrificing just one troublemaker, prevented what could have been a devastating, unnecessary destruction. Her practical wisdom in a moment of crisis stands out as a model of clear-headed leadership amid chaos that so much of this chapter otherwise lacks.
