At the time when kings normally go out to battle, David remains in Jerusalem instead, and one evening, walking on his rooftop, sees a beautiful woman bathing. He inquires about her and learns she is Bathsheba, wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of David’s own loyal soldiers currently away at war. Despite knowing she is married, David “sends,” “shalach” in Hebrew, for her, and she conceives a child.
Attempting to hide his sin, David sends for Uriah from the battlefield, hoping he will go home and sleep with his wife so the pregnancy will appear legitimate. But Uriah, showing remarkable integrity, refuses to enjoy the comfort of his own home while his fellow soldiers and the ark of God remain in tents on the battlefield, sleeping instead at the palace door. David tries again the next night, getting Uriah drunk, but he still refuses to go home.
Desperate, David sends a letter to Joab through Uriah himself, instructing that Uriah be placed in the fiercest part of the fighting and then abandoned so he will be killed, “and Uriah was slain.” When Bathsheba mourns her husband’s death, David brings her into his own house, and she becomes his wife, bearing him a son. The chapter closes with a devastating, simple sentence, “the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.”
David’s sin here didn’t stay contained to a single moment of temptation. It spiraled into deception, manipulation, and finally calculated murder, each attempted cover-up requiring an even more serious wrong than the last. This chapter shows how quickly unaddressed sin compounds when someone tries to hide it rather than confront it honestly.
