When the king of Ammon dies, David sends messengers to comfort his son Hanun, remembering the kindness his father had shown David. But Hanun’s princes convince him that David’s messengers are actually spies sent to scout the city before attacking. Hanun seizes David’s men, shaves off half their beards, cuts off their garments in the middle exposing them shamefully, and sends them away, causing them such “shame,” “bosh” in Hebrew, that David instructs them to wait at Jericho until their beards grow back before returning.
Realizing they have made themselves odious to David, the Ammonites hire Syrian mercenaries to help defend against the coming conflict they now anticipate. Joab leads Israel’s army out, and finding himself caught between the Ammonites in front and the Syrians behind, divides his forces strategically, taking the best troops himself against the Syrians while giving the rest to his brother Abishai against the Ammonites, encouraging him with genuine faith. “Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.”
Both fronts succeed, and the Syrians flee before Joab while the Ammonites retreat before Abishai back into their city. Hadarezer gathers additional Syrian reinforcements from beyond the river, but David personally leads Israel’s army against them, defeating them decisively and killing their commander. Seeing they have been beaten by Israel, all the Syrian kings previously allied with Ammon make peace with Israel and become their servants, no longer willing to help the Ammonites in this conflict.
A simple gesture of comfort and diplomacy, twisted by suspicion into deliberate humiliation, escalated into a full-scale war that ultimately expanded David’s influence over multiple neighboring kingdoms. This chapter is a sobering reminder of how quickly misplaced suspicion can transform genuine goodwill into unnecessary conflict.
