The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Preserved” it comes from the Hebrew Word “yasha” which means “to save, to preserve.”
David extends his kingdom’s borders through a series of decisive military campaigns. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Samuel 8.
David defeats the Philistines, subduing them, and defeats Moab as well, measuring captured soldiers with a line to determine who lives and who dies, with the survivors becoming his servants and paying tribute. David defeats Hadadezer, king of Zobah, capturing chariots, horsemen, and footmen, and when the Syrians of Damascus come to help Hadadezer, David defeats them too, putting garrisons throughout Syria of Damascus, which also becomes his servants bringing tribute.
David dedicates the gold shields and enormous quantities of brass taken from Hadadezer’s cities to the Lord, along with silver and gold from all the nations he subdues, Syria, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, Amalek, and spoil from Hadadezer himself. When the king of Hamath hears of David’s victory over Hadadezer, he sends his own son with vessels of silver, gold, and brass as gifts, which David also dedicates to the Lord.
David also strikes down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, putting garrisons throughout Edom, which likewise becomes his servants, “and the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.” The chapter closes with a summary of David’s administration, listing his key officials, Joab over the army, Jehoshaphat as recorder, Zadok and Ahimelech as priests, and Benaiah over the Cherethites and Pelethites, while David’s own sons serve as chief rulers.
David’s consistent practice of dedicating the spoils of his victories to the Lord, rather than simply keeping them for personal wealth, shows a king who recognized his military success ultimately belonged to God rather than to his own strategic brilliance. Even at the height of his growing power, David kept redirecting credit back to its true source.
