The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Stronghold” it comes from the Hebrew Word “metsudah” which means “stronghold, fortress.”
After years of civil war, all of Israel finally comes together to crown David as their king. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Samuel 5.
All the tribes of Israel come to David at Hebron, acknowledging that even while Saul was king, David was the one leading them out and bringing them in, and that the Lord had promised David would shepherd and rule over Israel. The elders anoint David king over all Israel, and he begins his reign at thirty years old, ruling a total of forty years, seven and a half years from Hebron and thirty-three from Jerusalem.
David and his men march against Jerusalem, still held by the Jebusites, who mock David confidently from their walls, but David captures the “stronghold,” “metsudah” in Hebrew, of Zion anyway, calling it the city of David, and grows greater continually, “for the LORD God of hosts was with him.” Hiram, king of Tyre, sends materials and craftsmen to build David a house, and David recognizes that the Lord has established his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
When the Philistines hear David has become king over all Israel, they come up seeking to capture him, but David inquires of the Lord and defeats them decisively at Baalperazim. When they attack again, David inquires again, and God instructs a different strategy this time, waiting to hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees before attacking, and David obeys exactly, striking the Philistines from Geba all the way to Gazer.
David’s consistent practice of inquiring of the Lord before every major military decision, even against the same enemy twice, shows genuine dependence rather than assuming past success guaranteed future strategy. His willingness to seek fresh guidance each time, rather than simply repeating what worked before, reflects real spiritual attentiveness.
