As the war between the two houses continues, David grows steadily stronger while Saul’s house weakens. After a dispute with Ishbosheth over a concubine, Abner, offended, decides to help transfer the entire kingdom to David, sending messengers offering to make a covenant with him. David agrees, but insists Abner first return his wife Michal, Saul’s daughter, to him. Abner successfully persuades the elders of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin to support David, and comes to Hebron with twenty men, where David holds a feast for him, and Abner departs in peace, promising to gather all Israel under David’s rule.
Joab, returning from a raid and learning that David let Abner go peacefully, confronts David angrily, suspicious that Abner came only to spy, though his true motive appears to be lingering revenge for his brother Asahel’s death. Without David’s knowledge, Joab sends messengers to bring Abner back, then takes him aside privately at the gate and kills him, avenging his brother’s “blood,” “dam” in Hebrew.
When David hears of this, he is deeply distressed, declaring himself and his kingdom innocent before the Lord of Abner’s blood forever, and pronounces a curse on Joab’s household. David commands Joab and the people to mourn, tearing their clothes and fasting, and personally follows the bier weeping. David composes a brief lament for Abner, and refuses to eat until evening despite the people’s urging, so that all Israel and all the people understand clearly that the king had no part in this murder, “and all the people… it pleased them,” recognizing David’s genuine innocence.
Joab’s murder of Abner, driven by personal vengeance disguised as loyalty, threatened to derail David’s carefully building reputation for integrity right at a critical political moment. David’s public, genuine grief and refusal to celebrate this convenient removal of a rival shows real character, distinguishing himself clearly from Joab’s ruthless personal agenda.
