After Saul’s death, an Amalekite man arrives at David’s camp in Ziklag with torn clothes and dirt on his head, reporting that Israel has fled the battle and that Saul and Jonathan are dead. He claims he personally killed Saul at Saul’s own request, finishing him off after finding him mortally wounded, and presents Saul’s crown and bracelet to David, expecting a reward for this news.
David and his men tear their clothes, mourn, weep, and fast until evening for Saul, Jonathan, and the people of Israel who fell that day. David then questions the young man directly, asking how he dared stretch out his hand to destroy “the LORD’s anointed,” and orders him executed, since his own testimony condemned him, “Thy blood be upon thy head.”
David composes a deeply moving “lament,” “qinah” in Hebrew, over Saul and Jonathan, instructing it be taught to the children of Judah. “The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!” He honors Saul generously despite their troubled history, praising his and Jonathan’s strength and speed, and mourns Jonathan with particular tenderness, “very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.” The lament closes repeating its refrain, “How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!”
David’s genuine grief over Saul, a man who had hunted him relentlessly for years, reveals remarkable freedom from bitterness. Rather than celebrating his enemy’s downfall, David honored him fully and publicly, showing that real character sometimes means mourning even those who caused us the deepest pain.
