One book, three chapters, and Peter’s final letter, written not long before his own death, warning believers about false teachers already creeping into the church and mockers who doubted Christ would ever return at all. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Book Reviews. I am Chris and this is Second Peter.
Peter opens by encouraging believers to actively grow in their faith, adding virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love, one quality building on another. He recalls personally witnessing Christ’s Transfiguration as firsthand proof behind his message, and reminds readers that Scripture itself did not originate from human opinion, since “holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
Chapter two delivers an extended, vivid warning about false teachers who will secretly bring in destructive teachings, driven by greed and immorality while promising others freedom while they themselves remain “servants of corruption.” Peter compares their eventual judgment to God’s past judgment on rebellious angels, the flood that spared only Noah in his day, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, concluding confidently that “the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment,” describing these teachers memorably as “wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest.”
Chapter three directly addresses scoffers mocking the promise of Christ’s return, asking sarcastically, “where is the promise of his coming?” Peter explains that God’s apparent delay is not slowness but patience, “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” He warns that the day of the Lord will still arrive suddenly, “as a thief in the night,” and promises “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” The Greek word “epignosis,” meaning full or genuine knowledge, appears repeatedly throughout this letter, distinguishing authentic understanding of Christ from the empty claims of false teachers. Peter closes by urging believers to keep growing “in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Second Peter takes two threats seriously at once: teachers twisting the truth from within the church, and doubters mocking God’s promises from outside it. Peter’s answer to both is the same, keep growing in genuine knowledge of Christ rather than settling for either false teaching or cynical doubt. Second Peter reminds us that God’s patience with a waiting world is never a sign of forgetfulness. It is mercy, giving more people time to turn toward Him.
