Philemon is a tactful, heartfelt appeal on behalf of a runaway slave named Onesimus, asking his owner to receive him back, not as property, but as a brother in Christ. Paul writes this personal letter to Philemon, a believer and slave owner whose home apparently hosts a local church, whose runaway slave Onesimus has somehow ended up with Paul during his imprisonment and become a genuine believer and a valuable helper to him there. Paul makes clear he could simply command Philemon to do the right thing, given his own apostolic authority, but chooses not to, appealing to him instead “for love’s sake,” gently but firmly asking him to receive Onesimus back.
Paul plays on the meaning of Onesimus’s own name, which means “profitable” or “useful,” noting that he “which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me.” He asks Philemon to welcome Onesimus back not merely as a returning slave, but as something far greater. The Greek word Paul uses here is “adelphos,” meaning “brother,” completely reframing the relationship between these two men in light of their shared faith in Christ.
Paul goes even further, personally offering to cover any financial debt or wrong Onesimus may have caused: “if he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account.” He gently reminds Philemon of his own deeper debt to Paul, likely referring to his own conversion, and expresses full confidence that Philemon will do “even more than I say.” The letter closes with Paul hopefully requesting a guest room be prepared, expecting to visit soon.
Philemon shows the gospel reshaping even the most unequal, complicated human relationships from the inside out. Paul never issues a legal command demanding Onesimus’s freedom. He appeals instead to a transformed heart, trusting that genuine love will accomplish more than any command ever could. Philemon reminds us that the gospel does not just change what we believe. It changes how we see and treat the people right in front of us.
