Jacob dies, and Joseph, overcome with grief, falls on his father’s face and weeps. Following Egyptian custom, Jacob’s body is embalmed, and a large company, including Pharaoh’s officials, travels with Joseph to bury him in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan, exactly as Jacob had requested, alongside Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Leah.
After their father’s death, Joseph’s brothers fear that Joseph will finally take revenge on them now that Jacob is gone. They come to Joseph, and he weeps again, comforting them with the same grace he showed years earlier. “Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good… to save much people alive.” The Hebrew word for comfort here is “nacham.”
Joseph lives to see his great-grandchildren before he dies at 110 years old. Before he passes, he tells his brothers that God will eventually bring their descendants out of Egypt and back to the land promised to Abraham, and he makes them swear to carry his bones with them when that day comes.
It is also worth noting how Joseph’s brothers approach him after Jacob’s death, afraid and unsure whether his earlier forgiveness would hold now that their father was gone. Joseph’s tears here are not new tears of shock, but tears born from being doubted after so many years of genuine reconciliation. His response proves that his forgiveness all along had never depended on Jacob being alive to enforce it.
Genesis opens with God creating the world and ends with a coffin in Egypt, but the story is far from over. Joseph’s dying words point forward to an exodus still to come. Every failure, betrayal, and hardship in Genesis was carried inside a promise that God was never going to abandon.
