GENESIS 48 ‐ “Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Blessing” it comes from the Hebrew Word “berak” which means “to bless, to kneel in blessing.”

A dying man crosses his hands on purpose, and reverses the birth order one more time. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 48.

As Jacob’s health fails, Joseph brings his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to receive a final blessing. Jacob recalls God’s promises to him at Bethel and formally adopts Joseph’s two sons as his own, giving them equal standing with his other sons in the inheritance.

Joseph positions his sons so that Manasseh, the firstborn, is under Jacob’s right hand, and Ephraim under his left, following the expected order. But Jacob deliberately crosses his arms, placing his right hand, the hand of greater blessing, “berak” in Hebrew, on Ephraim’s head instead. When Joseph tries to correct him, Jacob insists he knows exactly what he is doing, explaining that the younger son will actually become greater than the older.

Jacob blesses both boys together, asking that his own name, and the names of Abraham and Isaac, be carried on through them, and that they grow to multiply greatly in the earth.

It is also worth noting how clearly Jacob remembers his own encounter with God at Bethel, even decades later, retelling it to Joseph almost word for word. That memory shapes how he blesses his grandsons here. The God who met a frightened, fleeing young man on a stone pillow was still, in Jacob’s mind, the same God actively guiding his family’s future.

For the third generation in a row, God’s blessing skips over the expected firstborn. Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob over Esau, and now Ephraim over Manasseh. God’s plans consistently reject human assumptions about who deserves the greater blessing, choosing instead according to His own purposes.
