Two full years later, Pharaoh has two troubling dreams, seven fat cows devoured by seven thin cows, and seven healthy heads of grain swallowed by seven withered ones. None of his magicians or wise men can interpret them. Finally, the butler remembers Joseph and tells Pharaoh about him. Joseph is quickly brought from prison, and he tells Pharaoh plainly, “It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
Joseph interprets both dreams as one message. Seven years of great abundance will be followed by seven years of severe famine throughout Egypt. He advises Pharaoh to appoint someone “discreet and wise” to store up grain during the abundant years. The Hebrew word for this wisdom is “nabon,” meaning understanding or discerning.
Pharaoh is so impressed that he appoints Joseph himself to this position, placing him second in command over all of Egypt, thirty years old, and giving him authority, a new name, and a wife. Joseph oversees the storage of grain for seven years, and when the famine hits exactly as predicted, Egypt has enough food not only for itself, but for the surrounding nations as well.
Joseph went from a prison cell to the palace in a single day, but the years of unjust suffering before that moment were not wasted. Every skill he needed for leadership had been shaped through hardship. God’s preparation often looks nothing like what we expect until we see how it was used.
