The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Righteous” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tsadaq” which means “to be righteous, to be justified.”

Judah leaves his brothers and marries a Canaanite woman, having three sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er marries a woman named Tamar, but dies because of his wickedness before they have children. By the custom of the time, Onan is required to marry Tamar and raise up children in his brother’s name, but he refuses to fulfill this duty properly, and he also dies.
Judah, fearing for his last son’s life, sends Tamar back to her father’s house, promising Shelah to her once he is older, though he has no real intention of keeping that promise. Years later, disguising herself, Tamar tricks Judah himself into fathering children with her, taking his personal items as a pledge of payment. When Judah later hears that Tamar is pregnant, he furiously calls for her to be burned, until she produces his own belongings as proof.
Judah admits, “She hath been more righteous than I.” The Hebrew word for righteous here is “tsadaq.” Tamar gives birth to twins, Pharez and Zarah, and Pharez’s line eventually leads to King David, and ultimately to Jesus.
This uncomfortable chapter shows Judah at his lowest, failing to keep his word and judging Tamar more harshly than he judged himself. Yet God still wove this messy situation into the family line that would one day produce the Messiah. God’s redemptive plan is bigger than any one person’s failure.
