The Philistines engage Israel in battle at Mount Gilboa, and Israel is defeated decisively, with many men “falling,” “naphal” in Hebrew, slain on the mountain. The Philistines pursue Saul and his sons closely, killing Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. As the battle intensifies against Saul himself, archers wound him severely, and fearing capture and mockery by the uncircumcised Philistines, Saul asks his armorbearer to kill him, but the armorbearer, too afraid, refuses.
Saul takes his own sword and falls upon it, and when his armorbearer sees that Saul is dead, he follows his king’s example and does the same. Saul, his three sons, and his armorbearer all die together that day, and when the Israelites living in the surrounding valleys and across the Jordan see that the army has fled and that Saul and his sons are dead, they abandon their cities and flee, allowing the Philistines to take possession of them.
The Philistines find Saul’s body the next day, cut off his head, strip his armor, and send messengers throughout their land to proclaim the news, hanging his body and his sons’ bodies on the wall of Bethshan. But when the valiant men of Jabeshgilead, the very city Saul rescued so decisively at the very beginning of his reign, hear what has happened, they travel all night, take down the bodies, and give them a proper, honorable burial, fasting seven days in mourning for their fallen king.
The book closes exactly where a deeper irony lands hardest, the people of Jabeshgilead, the first city Saul ever rescued, are also the ones who show his memory the final act of honor and respect. Whatever Saul’s tragic failures became, his very first act of leadership still mattered enough to inspire loyalty even at the bitter, sorrowful end of his life.
