David and his men return to Ziklag to find it burned to the ground, and their wives, children, and possessions taken captive by Amalekite raiders. Overwhelmed with grief, David and his men weep until they have no strength left to weep anymore, and the situation grows so desperate that David’s own men speak of stoning him, since each man’s soul is bitter over his own lost family.
In this darkest moment, David “encouraged,” “chazaq” in Hebrew, himself in the Lord his God, inquiring of the Lord through the priest Abiathar whether he should pursue this raiding band, and receives clear assurance that he will succeed and recover everything. David sets out with six hundred men, though two hundred, too exhausted to continue, remain behind at the brook Besor. Along the way, they find an abandoned Egyptian servant, near death from hunger, who, once revived with food, reveals the location of the Amalekite raiding camp in exchange for a promise of safety.
David’s forces attack the celebrating, unsuspecting Amalekites, recovering everything that had been taken, including his own two wives, with nothing missing, small or great. When some of David’s men object to sharing the recovered spoil with the two hundred exhausted men who stayed behind, David insists firmly that everyone shares equally, whether they fought in battle or guarded the supplies, establishing this as a permanent statute and ordinance for Israel from that day forward. David also sends portions of the recovered spoil to various elders throughout Judah who had shown him kindness during his time as a fugitive.
David’s decision to encourage himself in the Lord, in the exact moment his own men were considering killing him out of grief and rage, models real resilience under devastating pressure. His insistence afterward that everyone share equally in the recovered spoil, regardless of whether they fought or simply guarded supplies, reveals genuine, principled fairness even in victory.
