Saul returns from fighting the Philistines and resumes his pursuit of David with three thousand chosen men. At Engedi, Saul enters a cave to relieve himself, unknowingly the very cave where David and his men are hiding deep within. David’s men urge him to seize this obvious opportunity, insisting the Lord has clearly delivered his enemy into his hand, but David instead quietly cuts off a small piece of Saul’s robe, and even this act troubles his own conscience deeply.
David rebukes his men, refusing to harm Saul, “the LORD’s anointed,” “mashach” in Hebrew, insisting it would be a great sin to stretch out his hand against someone God Himself had appointed, regardless of how Saul was treating him. After Saul leaves the cave, David follows and calls out to him, bowing respectfully, showing him the piece of robe as undeniable proof that he could have easily killed him but chose not to, insisting he holds no evil intent against Saul despite Saul’s relentless pursuit.
Saul, deeply moved, weeps and acknowledges that David is more righteous than he is, since David repaid his evil with good. Saul admits he now knows David will surely become king, and pleads with David to spare his own descendants once that happens, a request David swears to honor. Saul returns home, though David and his men remain cautiously in their stronghold rather than trusting this emotional moment to last.
David’s refusal to kill Saul, even when it seemed like an obvious, providentially arranged opportunity, reveals a deep conviction that God’s timing, not personal opportunity, should determine how and when he actually became king. Restraint here required real trust, that God would establish him rightfully without needing to seize the throne through violence.
