Saul’s jealousy finally turns into open, repeated attempts on David’s life. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Samuel 19.
Saul openly instructs Jonathan and his servants to kill David, but Jonathan, deeply loving David, warns him to hide and pleads with his father on David’s behalf, reminding Saul of David’s faithful service and the victory over Goliath, and asking why he would sin against innocent blood. Saul relents temporarily, swearing David will not be put to death, and David returns to serve him as before.
War breaks out again, and David defeats the Philistines decisively, but the evil spirit returns upon Saul while David plays the harp, and Saul hurls his javelin at him once more, though David escapes and flees. Saul sends messengers to watch David’s house and kill him in the morning, but Michal, his wife, warns him and helps him escape through a window, placing an idol in his bed covered with goat’s hair to deceive the pursuing messengers temporarily.
David flees to Samuel at Ramah, and when Saul sends messengers to capture him there, they find themselves prophesying instead, overcome by the Spirit of God. This happens with successive groups of messengers, and finally Saul himself goes, only to have the Spirit of God come upon him too, and he strips off his clothes and prophesies before Samuel all that day and night, giving rise again to the proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” This remarkable, repeated intervention buys David crucial time to escape safely.
God’s remarkable intervention, causing even Saul’s own messengers, and eventually Saul himself, to fall into uncontrollable prophesying rather than capturing David, shows how far God was willing to go to protect His anointed future king. Sometimes deliverance comes through the most unexpected, almost comical means imaginable.
