Jonathan, Saul’s son, attacks a Philistine garrison, provoking the Philistines to gather an enormous army, “as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude,” causing many terrified Israelites to hide in caves and thickets. Saul waits at Gilgal for Samuel to arrive and offer sacrifices, exactly as previously instructed, but when Samuel does not come within the appointed seven days, and Saul’s own troops begin scattering in fear, Saul takes matters into his own hands and offers the burnt offering himself.
Samuel arrives just as Saul finishes, and confronts him directly, asking what he has done. Saul explains his reasoning, that he felt forced to act, since the people were scattering, Samuel had not come as expected, and the Philistines were gathering for attack, so he forced himself to offer the offering without waiting any longer. Samuel responds with severe judgment, telling Saul he has acted “foolishly,” “sakal” in Hebrew, and has not kept the Lord’s commandment, so that his kingdom will not continue, since the Lord has already sought out “a man after his own heart” to be captain over His people instead.
Samuel departs, and Saul is left with only about six hundred men remaining. The chapter closes describing the Philistines’ overwhelming military advantage, having disarmed the Israelites of blacksmiths so thoroughly that only Saul and Jonathan possess actual swords or spears among the entire remaining army, a stark, discouraging picture of Israel’s vulnerability at this critical moment.
Saul’s failure here wasn’t a single dramatic sin, but impatience under pressure, taking matters into his own hands rather than trusting God’s timing through Samuel’s delayed arrival. This costly moment of self-reliance, choosing to act rather than wait, ended up defining the trajectory of his entire reign moving forward.
