As Samuel grows old, he appoints his sons Joel and Abiah as judges, but they turn aside after dishonest gain, taking bribes and perverting judgment. The elders of Israel gather and ask Samuel directly to appoint a “king,” “melek” in Hebrew, to judge them like all the other nations, since his own sons walk in corruption.
This request displeases Samuel, and he prays to the Lord about it. God tells Samuel plainly that the people have not rejected Samuel, but have rejected God Himself from being their king, exactly as they have done consistently since He brought them out of Egypt, forsaking Him to serve other gods. God instructs Samuel to grant their request, but first to solemnly warn them exactly what a king will demand from them.
Samuel delivers this warning in vivid, specific detail, that a king will take their sons for his armies and chariots, their daughters for his household service, the best of their fields, vineyards, and oliveyards, a tenth of their grain and flocks, and will ultimately make them his servants, until they cry out because of the king they themselves chose, though the Lord will not answer them in that day. Despite this stark warning, the people refuse to listen, insisting they want a king to judge them and fight their battles like other nations, and God tells Samuel to grant their request.
Israel’s demand for a king reflected a deeper spiritual problem, not merely dissatisfaction with corrupt judges, but a desire to be like the surrounding nations rather than trusting God’s own direct rule over them. Samuel’s detailed warning proved remarkably accurate, yet the people pressed forward anyway, choosing comfortable conformity over uncomfortable trust.
