Isaac, old and nearly blind, asks Esau to hunt game and prepare a meal so he can give him his final blessing. Rebekah overhears and devises a plan to secure the blessing for Jacob instead, dressing him in Esau’s clothes and covering his arms with goat skins to mimic Esau’s hairy skin. Jacob deceives his father directly, claiming to be Esau, and Isaac, though suspicious, gives Jacob the blessing intended for the firstborn.
The Hebrew word for this blessing is “berakah,” a formal, binding pronouncement of favor and inheritance. Isaac promises Jacob abundance, authority over his brothers, and a share in God’s covenant promise to Abraham. When Esau returns and discovers the deception, he is devastated, crying out, “Bless me, even me also, O my father.” Isaac can only give Esau a lesser blessing, and Esau vows to kill Jacob once their father dies.
Rebekah, fearing for Jacob’s life, sends him away to her brother Laban’s household, telling Isaac it is so Jacob can find a wife among their own relatives.
It is worth noticing how much fear runs through this entire chapter, Isaac’s fear of dying without giving a blessing, Rebekah’s fear that Jacob will miss his moment, and eventually Esau’s rage and Jacob’s fear for his own life. Nearly everyone in this family is acting out of anxiety rather than trust. Even when God’s plan for Jacob was already settled before he was born, the family still could not resist trying to force it into being on their own timetable.
Jacob’s blessing was real, but it came through deception that fractured his family. God’s plan for Jacob did not need this kind of manipulation to succeed, since God had already declared it before Jacob was born. Taking shortcuts to grab what God has already promised usually brings unnecessary pain.
