A famine strikes the land, and God tells Isaac not to go down to Egypt as his father once did, but to stay in Gerar. God renews the covenant promise with Isaac directly, promising to bless him and multiply his descendants “for my servant Abraham’s sake.” The Hebrew word for staying as a temporary resident there is “gur,” meaning to sojourn or dwell as a foreigner.
Isaac, echoing his father’s old mistake, tells the local people that Rebekah is his sister, fearing for his life because of her beauty. King Abimelech eventually discovers the truth and rebukes Isaac, but also warns his people not to harm either of them. Isaac grows extremely wealthy in that land, so much that the Philistines envy him and stop up the wells his father Abraham had dug.
Isaac patiently redigs well after well, facing conflict each time until he finally digs one that no one contests, and names it Rehoboth, saying, “the LORD hath made room for us.” God appears to him again at Beersheba, and Isaac builds an altar there. Abimelech later comes to make a formal covenant of peace with Isaac.
Isaac inherited both his father’s failures and his father’s promises. Rather than fighting over every contested well, he kept moving forward patiently until God made room for him. Patience under pressure often leads exactly where God intended us to be.
