The entire nation of Israel gathers as one man before the Lord at Mizpeh, and the Levite recounts the horrifying events at Gibeah in detail, demanding justice. This great “assembly,” “qahal” in Hebrew, unanimously agrees to march against Gibeah, and sends messengers throughout Benjamin’s territory demanding they hand over the wicked men responsible. Benjamin refuses, instead gathering their own army of twenty-six thousand men, including seven hundred especially skilled left-handed slingers, to defend their tribe.
Israel inquires of the Lord about how to proceed, and despite receiving God’s go-ahead, suffers devastating losses in the first two days of battle, losing forty thousand men combined against Benjamin’s smaller force. The Israelites weep before the Lord, fast, and offer sacrifices, inquiring once more whether they should continue fighting their own brothers, and God finally promises clear victory on the third attempt.
Using a strategic ambush, Israel draws Benjamin’s forces away from the city with a feigned retreat, then attacks Gibeah itself from behind, setting it on fire as a signal. Benjamin’s army, realizing too late they have been trapped, is nearly annihilated, with only six hundred men escaping to the rock of Rimmon, while Israel destroys the remaining Benjamite cities completely. Israel then mourns deeply over this devastating loss to their own brother tribe, recognizing a serious breach has now opened within the very family of God’s people.
This tragic civil war, launched in righteous response to genuine atrocity, still ends in devastating loss for everyone involved, on both sides of the conflict. Even justified anger at real wrongdoing carries real cost when it escalates into full warfare between brothers, a sobering reminder that righteous causes still require wisdom in how they’re actually carried out.
