Israel again does evil, and God delivers them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. An angel of the Lord appears to the wife of Manoah, a barren woman, announcing that she will conceive and bear a son who is to be a Nazarite, “nazir” in Hebrew, meaning set apart, unto God from the womb, forbidden from drinking wine or strong drink, eating anything unclean, or cutting his hair, since “he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”
The woman tells her husband Manoah about this remarkable visitor, and Manoah prays for the man of God to return and teach them how to raise this special child. The angel appears again, repeating the same instructions, and when Manoah offers to prepare a meal, the angel instructs him instead to offer a burnt offering to the Lord, since he does not eat human food. As the flame rises from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascends within it, and Manoah and his wife fall on their faces to the ground, suddenly realizing exactly who they had been speaking with.
Terrified, Manoah fears they will die for having seen God, but his wife reasons wisely that if God intended to kill them, He would not have accepted their offering or told them such wonderful things. The woman bears a son and calls him Samson, and the child grows, blessed by the Lord, with the Spirit of the Lord beginning to move him at times in the camp of Dan.
Manoah’s wife shows remarkable spiritual clarity in this chapter, calmly reasoning through her husband’s fear with simple, sound logic, that God’s clear blessing already proved His good intentions toward them. Sometimes the clearest thinking in a moment of fear comes not from panic, but from simply remembering what God has already shown to be true.
