Just as they had done with Gideon, the men of Ephraim confront Jephthah angrily, furious that he did not call them to join the fight against Ammon, and threaten to burn his house down over him. Unlike Gideon’s diplomatic handling of this same complaint, Jephthah responds sharply, explaining he had called for their help earlier and they refused to come. War breaks out between Gilead and Ephraim, and Gilead defeats them decisively.
Gilead’s men then seize the fords of the Jordan, and whenever a fleeing Ephraimite tries to cross, claiming not to be an Ephraimite, they test him by asking him to say the word “Shibboleth,” which means an ear of grain or a flowing stream. Since Ephraimites could not pronounce the “sh” sound correctly, saying “Sibboleth” instead, this single mispronounced word exposed them instantly, and forty-two thousand Ephraimites are killed at the fords as a result of this simple linguistic test.
Jephthah judges Israel for six years before his death. The chapter then briefly mentions three minor judges who follow him, Ibzan of Bethlehem, who has thirty sons and thirty daughters and judges seven years, Elon the Zebulonite, who judges ten years, and Abdon, who has forty sons and thirty grandsons riding on seventy donkeys, judging eight years, each receiving only a brief mention before the narrative moves on to introduce Israel’s next, most famous judge.
The tragic story of the shibboleth test shows how devastatingly destructive internal division among God’s own people could become, tribal pride and old grievances erupting into deadly civil conflict. This painful episode, tucked between more famous stories, is a sobering reminder that some of Israel’s worst violence throughout Judges came not from outside enemies, but from within their own family.
