Abraham sends his oldest servant on a mission with no room for guesswork. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 24.
Abraham, now old, makes his servant swear not to let Isaac marry a Canaanite woman, but instead to find a wife from his own relatives back in Mesopotamia. The servant travels there and prays for a specific sign, that the right woman would be the one who offers water not only to him but to his camels as well. Before he even finishes praying, Rebekah arrives and does exactly that.
The servant learns that Rebekah is related to Abraham’s family, and recognizes God’s hand at work. “I being in the way, the LORD led me.” Rebekah’s family agrees to let her go, and Rebekah herself chooses to leave immediately rather than wait, saying simply, “I will go.” The servant gives her gifts as part of the arrangement, an act of goodwill and covenant loyalty called “chesed” in Hebrew, meaning steadfast, faithful love.
When Isaac meets Rebekah in the field, he takes her as his wife, and the text notes tenderly that “Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”
The servant’s prayer in this chapter is a striking model of specific, faith-filled request. He does not simply ask for guidance in general terms. He asks God for a precise, verifiable sign, and watches expectantly for the answer. His immediate response when it happens, bowing his head and worshiping before he even finishes speaking, shows a man who genuinely expected God to answer him.
This whole chapter is a picture of God guiding ordinary details, a prayer, a conversation at a well, a family’s willingness, into exactly the right outcome. Rebekah’s quick willingness to go is worth noticing too. Sometimes following God’s clear leading simply means saying yes without delay.
