John describes seeing an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand, laying hold on the dragon, that old serpent, who is the Devil, and Satan, binding him a thousand “years,” “etos” in Greek, casting him into the bottomless pit, shutting him up, and setting a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled, and after that he must be loosed a little season. John describes seeing thrones, and those who sat upon them, judgment being given to them, and he sees the souls of those who were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, and had not received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands, and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years, this being the first resurrection, blessed and holy being he who has part in it, describing how after the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations, gathering them together to battle, Gog and Magog, but fire coming down from God out of heaven, and devouring them, the devil being cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, being tormented day and night forever and ever. John describes seeing a great white throne, and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them, seeing the dead, small and great, standing before God, and the books being opened, another book being opened, which is the book of life, the dead being judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works, the sea giving up the dead who were in it, death and hell delivering up the dead who were in them, and they were judged every man according to their works, closing with the sobering observation that death and hell were cast into the lake of fire, this being the second death, and whoever was not found written in the book of life being cast into the lake of fire.
This chapter’s description of the thousand-year reign, though generating extensive theological discussion regarding its precise nature and timing throughout Christian history, consistently affirms Christ’s genuine, ultimate authority and the eventual, complete defeat of evil despite Satan’s temporary release and final rebellion. Its sobering final judgment scene, every person judged according to their works and their presence in the book of life, provides this book’s most solemn reminder that ultimate accountability before God remains genuinely inescapable for every person.
