John describes hearing a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, “Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God,” the four and twenty elders and the four beasts falling down and worshiping God who sat on the throne, saying, “Amen; Alleluia,” a voice coming out of the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all ye his servants,” John hearing as it were the voice of a great “multitude,” “ochlos” in Greek, saying, “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” John describes rejoicing greatly, giving honor to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready, to her it being granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints, an angel telling him to write, “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb,” John then seeing heaven opened, and behold a white horse, and He who sat upon him being called Faithful and True, in righteousness He does judge and make war, His eyes being as a flame of fire, and on His head many crowns, having a name written that no man knew but He Himself. John describes Him being clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, and His name being called The Word of God, the armies which were in heaven following Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, out of His mouth going a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations, and He shall rule them with a rod of iron, He treading the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God, having on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS,” describing the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse, and against His army, but the beast being taken, and with him the false prophet, both being cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone, the remnant being slain with the sword of Him who sat upon the horse.
This chapter’s joyful celebration, the marriage supper of the Lamb, offers a beautiful, intimate image of ultimate reunion and celebration between Christ and His faithful people after such an extended, difficult season of conflict and trial. Christ’s dramatic appearance as Faithful and True, riding forth in righteous judgment, provides a fitting, climactic resolution to this book’s extensive conflict, decisively defeating evil through His own genuine, sovereign power and authority.
