John describes looking, and beholding a Lamb standing on Mount Sion, and with Him a hundred forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written in their foreheads, hearing a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great “thunder,” “bronte” in Greek, and he heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps, these singing a new song before the throne, which no man could learn except the hundred forty-four thousand, who were redeemed from the earth. John describes another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth, saying with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters,” another angel following, saying, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city,” a third angel following, warning that whoever worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark, shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, describing the patience of the saints, here are those who keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. John hears a voice from heaven saying to him, “Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them,” describing one like the Son of man sitting on a cloud, having a golden crown, and a sharp sickle, thrusting his sickle on the earth, and the earth being reaped, describing another angel thrusting in his sickle, gathering the vine of the earth, and casting it into the great winepress of the wrath of God, the winepress being trodden without the city, and blood coming out of the winepress, even to the horse bridles, this dramatic harvest imagery closing this chapter with vivid, sobering pictures of both blessed rest for the faithful and severe judgment for the persistently unrepentant.
John’s beautiful assurance, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors and their works follow them, offers genuine comfort about the meaningful, lasting significance of faithful lives even after death. This chapter’s dramatic harvest imagery, both the gathering of ripe grain and the treading of the winepress, uses vivid agricultural metaphor to communicate both blessed gathering for the faithful and severe consequence for persistent, unrepentant rebellion.
