John describes seeing four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree, and another angel ascending from the east, having the “seal,” “sphragis” in Greek, of the living God, crying with a loud voice to the four angels, urging them not to hurt the earth, the sea, nor the trees, till they had sealed the servants of their God in their foreheads, describing a hundred forty-four thousand sealed from all the tribes of the children of Israel. John describes after this beholding a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, kindreds, people, and tongues, standing before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, crying with a loud voice, “Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb,” all the angels standing round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, falling before the throne on their faces, and worshiping God, saying, “Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.” John describes one of the elders asking him who these are who are arrayed in white robes, and from where they came, John responding that he knows not, the elder answering, “These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them,” describing how they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat, since the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
This chapter’s beautiful vision of an innumerable multitude from every nation, tribe, and language standing before the throne offers genuine hope that redemption extends far beyond any single ethnic or national group toward truly universal, comprehensive salvation. The tender promise that God will personally wipe away every tear from their eyes offers real, intimate comfort, envisioning heaven not as distant abstraction but as genuine, personal restoration from every form of past suffering and grief.
