John is caught up to heaven and witnesses a magnificent vision of God’s throne. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Revelation 4.
John describes a door being opened in heaven, and the first voice he heard being as it were of a trumpet talking with him, saying, “Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter,” and immediately he was in the spirit, and behold, a “throne,” “thronos” in Greek, was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne, His appearance being like a jasper and a sardine stone, and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like an emerald. John describes twenty-four seats round about the throne, and upon the seats twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white raiment, having on their heads crowns of gold, out of the throne proceeding lightnings, thunderings, and voices, and seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, being the seven Spirits of God, before the throne being a sea of glass like crystal, and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, four beasts full of eyes before and behind, the first being like a lion, the second like a calf, the third having a face as a man, and the fourth being like a flying eagle. John describes these four beasts, each having six wings, being full of eyes within, resting not day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come,” and when these beasts give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him who lives forever and ever, casting their crowns before the throne, declaring, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created,” this magnificent throne room vision establishing heaven’s worship as the backdrop for the dramatic events about to unfold throughout the rest of this remarkable book.
John’s magnificent vision of heaven’s throne room, filled with continuous worship from elders, living creatures, and countless voices, offers a stunning glimpse of genuine, ongoing praise occurring even now beyond human sight and perception. The elders casting their crowns before the throne models genuine humility, recognizing that whatever honor or achievement they possess ultimately belongs entirely to the One who created and sustains all things.
