John records the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him, to show His servants things which must shortly come to pass, sending and signifying it by His angel to His servant John, who bore record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw, pronouncing blessed him who reads, and those who hear the words of this “prophecy,” “propheteia” in Greek, and keep those things which are written in it, for the time is at hand. John describes writing to the seven churches in Asia, grace and peace being from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth, describing how He loved them, and washed them from their sins in His own blood, and has made them kings and priests to God and His Father, declaring, “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him.” John describes turning to see the voice that spoke with him, and being in the midst of seven golden candlesticks, seeing one like the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, girded about the chest with a golden girdle, His head and hairs being white like wool, as white as snow, His eyes as a flame of fire, His feet like fine brass, His voice as the sound of many waters, having in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth going a sharp two-edged sword, His countenance being as the sun shining in its strength, John falling at His feet as dead, but He lays His right hand upon him, saying, “Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death,” instructing him to write the things he has seen, the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter.
John’s overwhelming vision of the glorified Christ, so magnificent that he fell as dead before Him, offers a stunning contrast to the humble, suffering Jesus of the Gospels, revealing His true, exalted majesty as reigning Lord. Christ’s tender response, placing His hand on John and saying fear not, demonstrates that even overwhelming divine glory remains genuinely accessible and comforting to His beloved, trembling servants.
