John declares whoever believes Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot loves him also who is begotten of Him, describing how they know they love the children of God, when they love God, and keep His commandments, since this is the love of God, that they keep His commandments, and His commandments are not “grievous,” “barys” in Greek, since whatever is born of God overcomes the world, and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even their faith.
John describes the witness, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, these three agreeing in one, if they receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater, for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son, he who believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself, describing how God has given them eternal life, and this life is in His Son, he who has the Son has life, and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
John declares these things he has written to those who believe on the name of the Son of God, that they may know that they have eternal life, and that they may believe on the name of the Son of God, describing the confidence they have in Him, that if they ask anything according to His will, He hears them, and if they know that He hears them, whatever they ask, they know they have the petitions they desired of Him, closing with a final series of confident assurances, that whoever is born of God does not commit sin, that they are of God, and the whole world lies in wickedness, and that the Son of God has come, and has given them an understanding, that they may know Him who is true, this being the true God, and eternal life, urging his little children to keep themselves from idols.
John’s closing purpose statement, these things I have written that you may know you have eternal life, models genuine, confident assurance as an appropriate, intended outcome of authentic faith rather than something believers should feel uncertain about. His teaching on confident prayer, if we ask anything according to His will He hears us, offers genuine encouragement for approaching God with real expectation rather than merely tentative, uncertain hope.
