John urges his readers not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits, whether they are of God, since many false prophets have gone out into the world, describing how they may know the Spirit of God, every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess this is not of God, this being the spirit of “antichrist,” “antichristos” in Greek, of which they have heard that it should come.
John declares his little children are of God, and have overcome them, since greater is He who is in them, than he who is in the world, urging them to love one another, since love is of God, and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God, he who does not love does not know God, for God is love, declaring, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
John declares if God so loved them, they ought also to love one another, no man having seen God at any time, but if they love one another, God dwells in them, and His love is perfected in them, describing how there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment, he who fears is not made perfect in love, closing with the memorable observation, “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”
John’s foundational declaration, God is love, offers one of Scripture’s most concise, profound statements about God’s essential nature, love not merely as something God does but as who He fundamentally is. His practical logic, that genuine love for God must express itself in genuine love for one’s visible brother, refuses to allow claimed spiritual devotion to substitute for actual, observable care toward other people.
