The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Laughter” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tsechoq” which means “laughter, joy.”
The laughter God promised finally arrives, wrapped in a newborn baby. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 21.
“The LORD visited Sarah as he had said,” and she bears a son to Abraham in his old age, exactly at the time God had promised. They name him Isaac, and Sarah declares, “God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.” The Hebrew word for this joyful laughter is “tsechoq.”
When Isaac is weaned, Sarah sees Ishmael mocking, and demands that Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael away. Abraham is grieved, but God tells him to listen to Sarah, promising that Ishmael will also become a great nation. Hagar and Ishmael nearly die of thirst in the wilderness, until God opens Hagar’s eyes to see a well of water, saving both their lives.
The chapter closes with Abraham making a peace treaty with Abimelech at a place called Beersheba, meaning “well of the oath,” settling a dispute over a well and formalizing goodwill between them.
It is easy to focus only on Isaac’s birth in this chapter, but Hagar and Ishmael’s near-death experience in the wilderness deserves attention too. Out of water and hope, Hagar sits apart from her son so she will not have to watch him die. But God hears the boy crying, and opens her eyes to see a well that was there all along. Sometimes what we desperately need has been near us the whole time, waiting to be seen.
God’s promise, delayed for decades, arrived at exactly the right time, and turned Sarah’s disbelief into genuine joy. Even Ishmael, sent away in pain, was not abandoned by God. His promises to Abraham’s family reached further than Abraham could have imagined.
