Peter warns that there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among them, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction, and many following their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of, describing how through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of them, whose judgment now of a long time lingers not, and their damnation slumbers not. Peter describes how God spared not the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto “judgment,” “krisis” in Greek, sparing not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly, turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemning them with an overthrow, making them an example to those who after should live ungodly, delivering just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked, since that righteous man, dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.
Peter describes these false teachers as presumptuous, self-willed, not afraid to speak evil of dignities, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil of the things they understand not, sporting themselves with their own deceivings, having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin, beguiling unstable souls, having a heart exercised with covetous practices, cursed children, forsaking the right way, following the way of Balaam, describing them as wells without water, clouds carried with a tempest, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved forever, closing with the sobering warning that it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them, comparing them to the proverb, the dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
Peter’s extensive historical examples, angels who sinned, the ancient flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, demonstrate that God’s judgment against false teaching and ungodliness has consistent historical precedent rather than being an unprecedented new concern. His stark comparison, a dog returning to its vomit, offers a genuinely unflattering but memorable warning about the danger of reverting to old, destructive patterns after once knowing better.
