Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, writes to those who have obtained like precious faith with them through the righteousness of God and their Savior Jesus Christ, declaring that His divine power has given them all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the “knowledge,” “epignosis” in Greek, of Him who has called them to glory and virtue, by which are given exceeding great and precious promises, that by these they might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Peter urges them, giving all diligence, to add to their faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity, since if these things are in them, and abound, they make them that they shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, but he who lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, having forgotten he was purged from his old sins.
Peter urges them therefore to give diligence to make their calling and election sure, since if they do these things, they shall never fall, describing how he will not be negligent to put them always in remembrance of these things, though they know them, and be established in the present truth, thinking it right, as long as he is in this tabernacle, to stir them up by putting them in remembrance, knowing shortly he must put off this tabernacle, describing how they did not follow cunningly devised fables when they made known to them the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty, having also a more sure word of prophecy, unto which they do well to take heed, as unto a light shining in a dark place, knowing that no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation, since prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Peter’s memorable chain of virtues, adding to faith goodness, and to goodness knowledge, and so on through the list, models genuine spiritual growth as an active, deliberate process rather than something that simply happens automatically once initial faith is established. His description of himself as an eyewitness to Christ’s majesty grounds his teaching in genuine, firsthand experience rather than mere secondhand tradition or speculation.
