Peter instructs wives to be in subjection to their own husbands, that even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives, beholding their chaste conversation coupled with fear, whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, wearing of gold, or putting on of apparel, but let it be the “hidden,” “kryptos” in Greek, man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
Peter instructs husbands likewise to dwell with their wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that their prayers be not hindered, urging all to be of one mind, having compassion one of another, loving as brethren, being pitiful, being courteous, not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing, knowing that they are called to this, that they should inherit a blessing.
Peter urges them to be ready always to give an answer to every man who asks a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear, having a good conscience, that whereas they speak evil of them as evildoers, those who falsely accuse their good conversation in Christ may be ashamed, since it is better, if the will of God be so, that they suffer for well doing than for evil doing, describing how Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring them to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit, closing with a brief mention of Noah’s ark, and baptism as a figure, the like whereunto now saves them, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God.
Peter’s instruction that genuine beauty lies in the hidden person of the heart, a gentle and quiet spirit, offers a countercultural priority valuing inward character over mere outward adornment or appearance.
