Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, writes to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, blessing the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten them again unto a lively “hope,” “elpis” in Greek, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for them.
Peter describes them as kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time, in which they greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, they are in heaviness through manifold temptations, that the trial of their faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen, they love, believing, they rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
Peter urges them, as obedient children, not to fashion themselves according to the former lusts in their ignorance, but as He who has called them is holy, to be holy in all manner of conversation, quoting, “Be ye holy; for I am holy,” reminding them they were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, urging them to love one another with a pure heart fervently, being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides forever, since all flesh is as grass, and its glory as the flower of grass, but the word of the Lord endures forever.
Peter’s description of a living hope, secured through Christ’s resurrection and reserved incorruptibly in heaven, offers genuine stability for scattered, displaced believers facing real uncertainty and hardship. His comparison of tested faith to refined gold suggests genuine trials, however difficult, serve a purifying purpose that ultimately produces something more precious and enduring than comfort alone could ever achieve.
