The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Inheritance” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nachalah” which means “inheritance, possession.”
One by one, the remaining tribes receive their land, and finally, so does Joshua himself. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Joshua 19.
The second lot comes out for Simeon, whose inheritance is taken from within the territory already given to Judah, since Judah’s portion had proven larger than they actually needed. Zebulun receives the third lot, its border described through various cities and landmarks in the northern region of the land, followed by Issachar’s inheritance, similarly detailed with its own specific cities and borders.
Asher receives the fifth lot along the northern coastal region, followed by Naphtali’s inheritance further north and east, each carefully documented with their respective cities and boundaries. The tribe of Dan receives the seventh and final lot among these remaining tribes, though their initial territory proves too small and difficult to fully secure, prompting them later to journey north and conquer the city of Leshem, renaming it Dan after their own tribe, and settling there instead.
Finally, once every tribe has received its inheritance, “they gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them,” giving him specifically the city he requested, Timnathserah in Mount Ephraim, according to the word of the Lord. Joshua builds the city and dwells there. The chapter closes noting that this completes the entire division of the land among Israel’s tribes, distributed by lot at Shiloh before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Joshua, the man who led this entire conquest and oversaw every tribe’s inheritance, waited until every other tribe had received their portion before finally receiving his own. His personal reward came last, not first, a quiet picture of a leader who consistently prioritized his people’s needs before his own throughout this entire long process.
