The lot for the children of Joseph, beginning with a general description of their combined territory, extends from the Jordan near Jericho westward through the mountains toward Bethel, encompassing a broad swath of central Canaan. This territory is then divided more specifically between Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, continuing the pattern established when Jacob blessed both boys as full tribes generations earlier.
The border, “gebul” in Hebrew, of the children of Ephraim is described in specific detail, running through various towns and landmarks, including Bethhoron and Gezer, extending to the Mediterranean coastline. This territory places Ephraim in a significant, central position within the land, fitting for the tribe that would eventually become so influential that its name is sometimes used to represent the entire northern kingdom of Israel in later biblical history.
The chapter closes with a telling admission, that Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so that “the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and serve under tribute.” This pattern of incomplete conquest, already seen with Judah and the Jebusites, repeats here with Ephraim, a recurring thread that will shape much of Israel’s later struggles with idolatry and compromise throughout the book of Judges.
The repeated phrase, they did not drive out the Canaanites, appearing now for a second tribe, quietly signals a coming problem. Partial obedience, leaving remnants of what God said to remove completely, tends to compound over generations. What looks like a small, tolerable compromise in Joshua’s time becomes a much bigger struggle in the book that follows.
