GENESIS 19 ‐ “The Destruction of Sodom”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Look back” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nabat” which means “to look, to regard, to gaze behind.”

Fire falls from the sky, and one look back changes everything. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Genesis 19.

Two angels arrive in Sodom, where Lot insists they stay at his house rather than in the open street. That night, the men of the city surround the house demanding to abuse the visitors, confirming just how corrupt Sodom has become. The angels strike the crowd with blindness and urge Lot to gather his family and flee immediately, warning that the city is about to be destroyed.

Lot hesitates, so the angels take hold of his hand and the hands of his wife and daughters, and lead them out of the city themselves. They are told to flee to the mountains and not look back. Fire and brimstone rain down on Sodom and Gomorrah, destroying the cities completely. Lot’s wife, lingering behind, looks back and becomes a pillar of salt.

Lot and his two daughters escape to a small town, and the chapter ends with a troubling account of Lot’s daughters, believing no other men are left in the world, deceiving their father to preserve their family line.

It is worth noting how Lot’s own reluctance nearly costs him everything. Even after being warned directly that the city will be destroyed, he lingers, and the angels physically have to pull him and his family out. Sometimes the greatest danger is not disbelief, but simply moving too slowly to act on what we already know to be true.

God’s judgment on Sodom was real, but so was His mercy toward Lot, who was rescued almost against his own will. Lot’s wife shows the danger of looking back toward what God has already told us to leave behind. Rescue sometimes requires letting go completely.
