Despite God’s clear command that everything in Jericho be devoted entirely to Him, a man named Achan secretly takes a Babylonish garment, silver, and gold for himself, and “the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.” Unaware of this hidden sin, Joshua sends spies to Ai, who report the city is small and easily taken. About three thousand men go up, but they flee before the men of Ai, who kill thirty-six Israelites, causing the people’s hearts to melt with fear.
Joshua tears his clothes and falls before the ark, crying out to God in genuine distress, fearing this defeat will embolden Israel’s enemies and bring reproach on God’s own great name. God responds firmly that Israel has sinned, taking devoted things and hiding them among their own belongings, “therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies.” The Hebrew word for this trouble, and for the valley where judgment falls, is “akar.”
God instructs Joshua to identify the guilty party through a process of elimination by tribe, family, household, and individual, and the lot eventually falls on Achan, who confesses exactly what he took and where he hid it. His confession is confirmed true, and Achan, his family, and everything he possesses are taken to the valley later named Achor, meaning trouble, where he is stoned and burned, along with the stolen items, removing this sin from the camp. Only then does the Lord turn from His fierce anger, clearing the way for Israel’s next attempt against Ai.
One man’s hidden sin, kept secret from everyone else in the camp, still cost the lives of thirty-six Israelite soldiers and brought judgment on the entire nation. Sin rarely stays truly private in its consequences. Achan’s story is a sobering reminder that what feels like a personal, hidden choice can ripple outward and affect an entire community.
