The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Memorial” it comes from the Hebrew Word “zikkaron” which means “memorial, remembrance.”

Once the entire nation has crossed the Jordan, God instructs Joshua to choose twelve men, one from each tribe, to take twelve stones out of the very place where the priests’ feet stood firm in the riverbed, and carry them over to their camping place for the night. Joshua explains the purpose of this “memorial,” “zikkaron” in Hebrew, that when children in the future ask what these stones mean, their parents can tell the story of how the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant, “that all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty.”
Joshua also sets up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan itself, where the priests’ feet had stood, remaining there as an additional lasting witness. The priests carrying the ark remain standing in the middle of the riverbed until everything commanded by Moses through Joshua is completely finished, and the people hurry across. As soon as the priests carrying the ark step out onto dry land, the waters of the Jordan return to their place, overflowing its banks just as before.
The armed men from Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh cross over ready for battle ahead of the rest of Israel, exactly as they had promised Moses. That day, God magnifies Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and the people fear him just as they had feared Moses all the days of his life, confirming God’s promise from the very start of the book.
God specifically designed this memorial to answer a future child’s honest question, what do these stones mean? Faith passed down to the next generation rarely happens automatically. It requires deliberate, physical reminders and intentional retelling, exactly what these twelve stones were built to provide for generations still to come.
