JAMES 4 ‐ “Draw Nigh to God”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Friendship” it comes from the Greek Word “philia” which means “friendship, love.”

James identifies the source of conflict in worldly desire while urging genuine humility before God. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is James 4.

James asks where wars and fightings among them come from, answering that they come from their own lusts that war in their members, describing how they lust and have not, they kill and desire to have, and cannot obtain, they fight and war, yet have not, because they ask not, and when they ask, they receive not, because they ask amiss, to consume it upon their own lusts.

James asks whether they do not know that “friendship,” “philia” in Greek, with the world is enmity with God, whoever therefore will be a friend of the world becomes the enemy of God, urging them to submit themselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from them, drawing near to God, and He will draw near to them, cleansing their hands, sinners, and purifying their hearts, being double minded.

James urges them to humble themselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift them up, warning against speaking evil of one another, and against boasting of tomorrow, since they do not know what shall be on the morrow, comparing life to a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away, instead urging them to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that,” closing with the sobering conclusion that to him who knows to do good, and does not do it, to him it is sin.

James’s diagnosis of conflict’s true source, unmet worldly desires and misdirected prayer rather than mere external circumstances, offers penetrating insight into the genuine root causes behind so much interpersonal strife. His memorable comparison of life to a vanishing vapor grounds the instruction to humbly submit plans to God’s will in genuine recognition of life’s fundamental brevity and uncertainty.
