James warns his brethren against many becoming teachers, since they shall receive greater condemnation, describing how in many things they all offend, and if any offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body, comparing this to bits in horses’ mouths that turn about their whole body, and ships turned by a very small helm.
James declares the “tongue,” “glossa” in Greek, is a little member, and boasts great things, describing how a great fire a little matter kindles, the tongue being a fire, a world of iniquity, so set among the members that it defiles the whole body, sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell, since every kind of beasts and birds can be tamed, but no man can tame the tongue, an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, with which they bless God, and curse men made after His similitude, blessing and cursing proceeding out of the same mouth, which ought not to be so.
James asks whether a fountain sends forth at the same place sweet water and bitter, whether a fig tree can bear olive berries, or a vine figs, asking who is wise and endued with knowledge among them, urging him to show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom, describing earthly wisdom as envious and full of strife, confusion and every evil work, but the wisdom that is from above being first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy, closing with the observation that the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James’s vivid description of the tongue as a small fire capable of igniting an entire forest offers a genuinely sobering reminder that seemingly minor words carry disproportionately large, potentially destructive consequences. His careful contrast between earthly wisdom, marked by envy and strife, and heavenly wisdom, marked by purity, peace, and mercy, provides a practical framework for evaluating genuine spiritual maturity through observable character rather than merely claimed insight.
