The writer explains the law, having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices, offered year by year continually, make those who approach perfect, since then would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers once purged would have had no more conscience of sins, but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year, since it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins. The writer describes Christ coming into the world saying, “Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me… Lo, I come to do thy will, O God,” by which will believers are “sanctified,” “hagiazo” in Greek, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all, describing how every priest stands daily ministering and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins, but this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.
The writer urges his readers, having boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, to draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having their hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and their bodies washed with pure water, holding fast the profession of their faith without wavering, considering one another to provoke unto love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of themselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as they see the day approaching, closing with warnings against willful sin after receiving knowledge of the truth, and encouragement to cast not away their confidence, which has great recompense of reward, since they have need of patience, that after they have done the will of God, they might receive the promise, “the just shall live by faith,” but if any man draws back, God’s soul shall have no pleasure in him.
This chapter’s contrast between endlessly repeated animal sacrifices and Christ’s single, sufficient offering, sat down rather than standing to continue ministering, powerfully illustrates that His work of redemption is genuinely, completely finished rather than ongoing. Its practical exhortation not to forsake gathering together reminds every generation that genuine faith flourishes through active, intentional community rather than isolated, private devotion alone.
