The writer urges his readers to give the more earnest heed to the things they have heard, lest at any time they should let them slip, since if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression received a just recompense, how shall they escape if they neglect so great “salvation,” “soteria” in Greek, which was first spoken by the Lord, and confirmed by those who heard Him.
The writer explains that God did not put the world to come, of which he speaks, in subjection to angels, but has instead put all things under the feet of man, though we do not yet see all things put under him, but we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
The writer explains that it was fitting for God, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings, since both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren, describing how since the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise took part of the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage, since He took not on Him the nature of angels, but the seed of Abraham, being made like His brethren in all things, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest, able to succor those who are tempted, since He Himself has suffered, being tempted.
This chapter’s sobering warning against drifting away from such a great salvation reminds readers that genuine faith requires ongoing, deliberate attention rather than passive assumption that it will simply take care of itself. Its tender description of Christ genuinely sharing our humanity, tasting death and suffering temptation, establishes exactly why He can serve as such a merciful and understanding high priest for those still struggling with weakness and temptation.
